Statements by the staff of the show or the official comics are always an easy way to get clarification, but if they contradict each other, it’s always best to look at the material itself.  
Besides, with how many hate for the official comics flows around, it’s to expect they are a bit afraid of publically confirming that they are canon, as the comic haters would undoubtedly lose their shit over it and rush to Twitter to bury them under hate tweets.  
If there’s doubt, the best way is always to closely analyze the show and the comics, to find out how they fit together.

I’ve given up on trusting what the latest “official” statement is and just gonna trust whatever I see or don’t see actually happen in the show.

That logic is like saying that since Discord referenced Star Wars, they “might as well go the full route now” and have a Star Wars crossover. References do not imply canonicity, especially when we have a recent official statement saying said source is non-canon.

Okay, now I feel stupid that I didn’t think of that. I compared Petunia with Thestra already, by their similar cutie marks and because both of them have a special talent that’s related to bones, but it never crossed my mind that both of them also got helped by Equestria’s one and only Cutie Mark Counselors! xD  
Somehow, the cuteness of Petunia must have switched something off in my brain….. Best switch-off ever, though.
 
 
Edit: Now I really want that Thestra visits Applebloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle in Ponyville and that she meets Petunia there. They would have to tell each other so much.  
And if it happens, I want this to be a full episode centered around the two!  
The show already referenced the official comics twice now, so it might as well go the full route now.  
The road has been paved for it. :)

This could explain why the CMC were not unsettled by the bone cutie mark when they first saw Petunia. Not the first time they’ve seen one!

True but there’s nothing saying dinosaur bones couldn’t be beneath one’s own backyard.

One of these had considerably more contrived writing helping her, though.

One of them can use a spell that showcases a creature’s bone structure. With a little tweaking, she could use that spell to find bones underground. They’d make an awesome duo together.
