It just means that the upload isn’t “theirs” anymore, since someone else “took” it. It really shouldn’t matter like you said, but it’s kind of fun seeing my uploads do well.

Isn’t something getting merged a good thing? That means the resolution is updated, or some other edit occurred and needed to be updated. So I’m confused.

What rustles my jimmies about it is that it completely ignores optimization. The one with the higher file size always gets priority even if it looks completely identical.
 
Actually, the file size isn’t considered at all. Resolution, artifacts, file type, watermarks, the artist’s own statements about the images - those things matter a lot. File size isn’t even looked at.
 
In fact, off hand I don’t even know if the file that remains is larger or smaller - I’ve never even looked at the size of the files when comparing duplicates.
