She’s been in Season 6 as a character who’s backstory makes no sense(could of joined Celestia’s school with Sunburst at any time with her power as a kid) and her growth with the 7 main characters completely skipped.
 
(The kind of stuff that makes editorial mandate cry tears of joy and causes writers to cry tears of blood and misery.)
 
Outside of her sparks of frustration sharing her woes with Trixie, she’s been there only to desperately give credibility to Twilight and the plot in either direct and roundabout ways while showing no personality outside of being a slightly more cynical and street smart version of Twilight’s non-invested persona…
 
….which is convenient because Twilight herself, a pony new to ponyville and never doubts anything the wise but hard-to-know mentor character says, was created to service the plot while the other 5 and eventually Sunset and Human Twilight thrived within the plot.
 
Twilight was written with a personality with quirks too, but the more Twilight has to service the plot, the less her personality appears. Even in this episode where Spike bears his soul in front of everybody, Twilight responds like a politician, not even the slightest bit of vulnerability, and Starlight there to be her ‘yes you were right’ pony.

True, but @root said making friends. In the premier, we’re already thrust ahead in the timeline where Spike and Starlight are already very close friends. We never got to see their relationship form, no context provided, we’re simply updated on Spike’s current level of friendliness with Starlight and vice-versa after a normal interaction.
 
With no context provided, Starlight’s type of relationship with Spike and the other six will, and has, shift around from writer to writer to suit the plot’s needs.

Spike is making friends this season. First Ember and now Thorax. What’s really interesting is that both of these friends can be extremely influential in the future.
