You know you have similar headcanon as my headcanon. And honestly as much i want the average pony as tall as 4.5-5 feet. But most of bronies headcanon put them around this size 3.5 - 4.5 feet. Which is sound reasonable to me.

Given that the estimation came from one of the most well-educated ponies in the country, it’s very likely that the margin of error was very small.

Given that it’s Twilight, it could have been anywhere from 7.5 feet to 8.499999… feet, inclusive.
Which was simply an observation made by Twilight as she was passing by it from a distance. There’s no reason to believe it was exactly 8 feet.
The words “8-foot tall candy cane” was directly said in that sequence from the first act of Hearth’s Warming Tail.
See my comment right above. The results are consistent with other, more recent size comparisons anyway.
I doubt there’s much of a margin of error (probably less than half a foot in either direction). After all, that’s Twilight “I give square roots to the 11th place” Sparkle we’re talking about.
