Don’t forget that despite the fantastic setting most ponies in Equestria just seem to go about mundane daily lives. Wanting to be an adventurer, while more possible than in our world, would still be just a dream to the average pony. It would be the same reason Daring Do’s books are so popular; they’re real events but not ones many can experience firsthand.

Nah, it’s a generic helmet. It looks more like the helmet worn by the Deathcharger in World of Warcraft than anything else. People like to think that everything is referencing the things they like or are familiar with. You should see the Facebook page asking if a sign with a stick man on it was a Portal reference.
That’s really not a generic helmet, except in-universe. It’s a distinctive look. Most helmets with horns, which is a terrible idea anyway and was never worn in battle in real life, have them pointing up. Plus, since both Spike and Discord here are in full cosplay for specific characters, yeah, it’s a reference.
The ones that Mario and Cloud know I guess.
