What you said about her character is that she is without much to say. You yourself have agreed that isn’t true.

I was stating my opinion. If you took that as an implication on my part that you thought she was a bad one, I apologize for your mistake.

Either way, I did not intend to imply or say that you thought she was a bad character. That was your doing.

“a character who was merely a poorly written villain at the beginning and barely did anything since”

Also, note that I never said you said she was a bad character, neither did I even imply it. That seemed like a random comment to me, or at least a misguided one.

I said you downplayed her role and growth. You said she did little. I never said you thought she was a bad character.

I never said she was a bad character, do not put words in my mouth. I merely said she did nothing and then admitted right after that what I said was stupid.

There you go again with that over generalized form of speaking. Should I say I am sick of people talking down the growth and exceptionally well written story (that part is incredibly subjective, I’m well aware) of Sunset? I could, but I would just be blowing my own horn as a person who feels they are fighting ‘everyone else’.

What I actually want to say is I dislike YOU saying such about her character, especially so when it was in response to me wishing to see more of her.

Sunset is quite a good character, if a bit cliche, ultimately. I like her for her depth and her showcasing the growth one can achieve through personal self reflection.
You may not like her, as is your right, but don’t complain about ‘people’, being up in arms about pointless debates when you yourself started one.

JUST TO CLARIFY:
I’m actually quite enjoying this conversation, despite what the text may seem to convey :D

I think I see what you’re saying, I just feel that people should not get up in arms over the possibility that a character isn’t the protagonist of a film.

@Ihhh
I don’t speak in such vague ways as, ‘people say’, I can only say that you said she barely did anything, when she has in fact done quite a bit since her first movie. I’m not gonna generalize, I’m only going to speak to you.

I never argued that she was a protagonist in Rainbow Rocks, and you are asking what she did?

Experience doubt from the interactions with the student body as a whole, where everyone disliked her. She is plagued by self doubt over what she did and whether there is any hope for her, though she wants desperately to prove that she can change. But she feels she can’t get the chance since not only do the student body hate her, but she feels alienated by her friends since they never invited her to join the band. The scene with her and Twilight at the fridge expose the interesting dynamic and parallels between their positions. Twilight is feeling the intense pressure of everyone’s expectations (which Sunset will learn about next film) and Sunset feeling she can’t escape the place she put herself in.
Oh, and Sunset is the first to identify the Sirens as a threat, call Twilight and, of course, lend her magic to the final battle against the Sirens.

A lot of what happens to Sunset in Rainbow Rocks isn’t what she does, but what she feels. The want to prove yourself, the doubt of your own self worth, regret, a growing relationship of mutual understanding with Twilight as a fellow person unto which massive amounts of pressure is put.

And if we bring in the short, My Past is Not Today, we see something about Sunset I adore. It’s her forgiving herself BY herself. Her friends supported her and gave her the foundation she needed to give herself a second chance, but it was up to Sunset and Sunset alone to forgive herself. On that rooftop, Sunset confronted her demons, looked them in the eye and understood that it wasn’t a reflection any more, but a memory. Knowing that, she was able to grasp a new destiny for herself, with the fiery wings and tail signifying her self created rebirth as a new person from the ashes of the old. Still the same, but entirely different.

Oh, and as for the comics…

I’m gonna say that they are Canon. The show doesn’t take any consideration of the comics whatsoever and can retcon certain events (Moondancers appearance for one), but regardless is still a level of canon. It isn’t a matter of is or isn’t. There are different…grades…of canon.
The show is A, the comics and Equestria Girls B, the novels and special books (Journal of the Two Sisters) are C and the toy descriptions and such are D.
Remember, according to HASBRO, all MLP products of Gen 4 is canon, as long as it was official, even if it contradicts itself.

Perhaps I was ignorant to say she did nothing, but I do still think that people are magnifying her role in the films. What I meant was, what has she done that would make it’s wrong for another character to have the spotlight, especially when that characters counterpart has been the protagonist of a majority of the films? How much did she do in rainbow rocks? She did help The rest of the main six, but what else did she do? What happened to her is not the same as what she did, and as the comics status is debatable, it is not a good idea to invoke them in discussions of the show and movies. In the movies, she did not perform any feats beyond twilight or discord, n in the movies, she did not perform any feats beyond twilight or discord, all we know from the movies is that she was trained by Celestia.

In Friendship Games, Sunset and Twilight share the role of protagonist for the majority of the film. It could be said that they are both deuteragonists, neither being the main focus of the story as it explored both their sides, but considering the finale of the film, I feel it established that Sunset was the protagonist and Twilgiht was the deuteragonist, as a deuteragonist is someone whose own path initially can coincide with the protagonist but leads to conflict with them later on. Now, it could also be argued that the roles should be switched, that Sunset be the deuteragonsit and Twilight being the protagonist, but considering the theming and the clear distinction of good and evil at the end, it would make sense for Sunset to be protagonist.

Sunset and Starlight have things in common, but they are very different, I agree. But Sunset is FAR from a character who has done nothing, and you’re ignorance betrays your argument.

Sunset, who transformed into a mind manipulating demon with ambitions to take over two dimensions?
Who was trained by Celestia to a degree that made her perform feats far beyond Twilight’s (or anyone else’s besides Discord, Luna and Celestia)? Her comic appearance shows her performing an age spell to a insane degree with no problem. Twilight required a tap into her über magic that she has no control over
Who has immense remorse for her actions and is punished for them after the fact by the entire student body, and even after their forgiveness after saving them, continues to have self doubts about herself?
Sunset, who through her trials has learnt what the elements mean, but more than that, can understand and empathise with evil because she was their too?
Sunset is far more than what you say.
She suffered for what she did and had to grow as a person by looking deep inside of herself and finding forgiveness for her actions, that the person she was isn’t the person she is now.

I’d also like to point out that the Friendship Games cover has Sunset and Twilight SHARING it.

And that’s a problem because? She is not the protagonist. The protagonist has always been twilight sparkle. Part of what made it bait was the comment about starlight, which is demonstrably untrue and shows how obsessed this fandom is with a character who was merely a poorly written villain at the beginning and barely did anything since. All they have in common is that they are reformed villains who have become friends with the mane six.

Ah, Sunset
Humiliated and written awkwardly in your first appearance
Having a cheap and inferior version of you appear in the main show
Having your storyline in Friendship Games cut out for time
And now being shoved in the background while a cheap and inferior version of Twilight takes center stage.

At least you’ll always have Rainbow Rocks.
