A long while back I read something from either Clover or TSP (or someone else who manages Derpi) about absurdly-sized images and how it can unnecessarily use extra resources, especially for a volunteer-run and donation-funded site like this and it kinda stuck.

For that reason I typically never uploaded my usual vectors bigger than the 1600/1280-wide DA preview or I’d export in those sizes specifically for Derpi/Tumblr/FB, while I let DA handle whatever size I feel like blowing it up to (typically 6k-high), but I’d step it up just a bit here and there or for special works maybe. Considering what people typically use vectors for (as opposed to most standalone art pieces) I feel there’s a point where an image can be unnecessarily large for that kind of use, so in most places I’ll post something in a “healthy” resolution and expect someone that wants something bigger to go to the source.

It can be nice to zoom in on and scroll around a blown-up pony, though.
