I know, I’m just exploring an idea of how an image like this one would play out if this show was oriented toward an older audience. It’s completely out of line with Starlight’s character to become something of an “Omnicidal Maniac”, as you put it, because her goal was to make Equestria a better place. She saw Cutie Marks as a symbol of inequality and pain because of her own past experiences, and wanted everypony to live in a better world.

That said, I just like to toy with ideas like having her philosophy be twisted in such a way that she comes to believe that she’d be doing everypony a favor by killing them all so they no longer have to worry about the pain of being separated by their marks ever again; So that they’d never have to feel the same pain that she had felt. Would make for such a grim villain, especially considering how powerful Starlight’s raw abilities are.

the problem with that is Starlight only wanted to Equestria a land free of cutie marks, which she saw as a symbol of inequality–she never intended to destroy Equestria. if she did, she wouldn’t have freaked out when she saw the barren wasteland it had become. when she first saw the emptiness before her, she thought Princess Twilight was playing mind tricks on her. the whole “Glim Glam the Omnicidal Maniac” thing just goes against everything she once stood for.

If Starlight had a reaction like this when she saw this timeline, it would make her a pretty creepy villain overall when we looked back on her as a character. I think it’d be a bit too much for what is, at heart, a children’s show. Consider the information we have about the other villains in the show. All the other villains have a goal:

Nightmare Moon - Get revenge on Celestia and rule Equestria
Discord - Bring complete and total chaos to Equestria
Queen Chrysalis - Rule the planet with her as the Queen of her Hive
King Sombra - Conquer and rule the planet
Tirek - Absorb all magic and rule Equestria
Cozy Glow - Take away all magic and use the friendship to attain power.

Basically all of those arrive at the same idea - Rule Equestria, in some capacity.

Then compare those ambitions with this hypothetical version of Starlight Glimmer, where her goal is essentially - Destroy everything to eliminate the existence of all cutie marks and inequality

That’d be a Series Finale villain, especially since we saw in this episode that Starlight is on par with an Alicorn, let alone the Element of Magic herself, in terms of raw magical power. So it’s entirely believable that she stands a real chance at accomplishing her goal; she’s a serious threat to everything that is. Not only that, but she knows her way of doing things will lead to the end of the world and that’s exactly what she wants.

I can get excited just at the thought of people reacting to seeing her again if she went down this path and was never reformed. Just the mere idea that her philosophy, already wrong and leading to terrible consequences, was twisted even further into believing that the final timeline Twilight had taken her to was a perfect world because nothing was left and therefore it had no inequality and no pain. It’d be one of those moments where when she came on screen, everyone starts paying very close attention to what’s about to happen. Even Twilight’s reaction would probably just be complete and utter terror at seeing Starlight again after this encounter.

I guess I’m kind of drawn in and driven to explore this idea because MLP really needs/needed a long-term threat. Chrysalis was okay until Season 8 where she started to become somewhat of a joke, more or less. Beyond that, I just like the concept of the main villain of the series being a pony, one that’s both intelligent and powerful, and has a driving force for what she believes is right.

All that aside, I agree with you about Season 5. I’ve been with the fandom since December of 2010 (first episode was “Bridal Gossip”), and I favor Seasons 1, 2, and 5 the most. Season 5 probably has the most consistently good set of episodes. I can’t really think of any that stick out to me as bad.

Agreed.
That would have been an unexpected reaction from her but would have cemented her as wanting to literally destroy everything. I still remember watching this finale for the first time when it aired and I wish I could re-experience it again for the first time. Season 5 was so full of surprises and so highly polished.

This is another concept where I can only imagine how people would react if this was Starlight’s actual reaction. Everyone anticipates her being shocked (most people are still surprised she fights back at all after seeing this future), but then she turns around and has this crazy grin on her face. In an instant, I think if this was her reaction I think she’d go down as easily the most terrifying villain in MLP. Probably even one of the most unnerving cartoon villains ever.

Something along the lines of this is what I’d imagine it being like:

Twilight, Starlight and Spike are sucked into the portal one last time, the shot fades in to show a barren wasteland. The wind howls eerily as we pan over to Starlight, seen from behind. Suddenly, she spins around to face Twilight, with an impossibly big grin on her face. As she looks to Twilight the Alicorn and her dragon recoil in shock.

Twilight:“Starlight… there’s nothing here….” Twilight said, her voice weak as she looks over the unicorn in front of her with renewed fear and trepidation.

Starlight:“Exactly… there’s nothing here. Here, Twilight… here cutie marks no longer even exist. Here nopony has to live with the pain of a cutie mark ever again.”

Well, this is how some bronies see Starlight Glimmer’s attitude during that scene…

@Mr grump
I think part of the problem comes from the fact that Glimmer went from a misguided ideologue with tyrannical tendencies to a vengeance-driven jerk to a penitent in the space of her first two stories, so different fans see different versions as the “real” Glimmer. I miss the ideologue, but I’m also happy with the penitent so far.

@Ihhh
There is no arguement to make. She was mean and she was hateful. Even a starlight fanboy like mr. mildock admitted she was evil and that he even preferred her when she was evil. It doesn’t matter how misguided she was, the acts she commmitted required a certain amount of meanness and any vendetta that targets a single person is fueled by hatred of that person or could be considered a hateful act.
