Originally, I was pretty angry that Starlight is to be a new main character. But since season 6 started going, I am now officially in the “meh” category when it comes to her.

Yeah I just checked the comments. By the way most of them are talking it seems like they already have positive expectations for her. I don’t see a comment there that implies that people who hated her are convince.

Check the comments about the spotlight, somepeople may give a chance about Starlight redemption and the hate towards her it was as big as the known universe.

Agreed. Even objectively, that essay on Glimmer felt like it was gearing only towards people who had ONLY positive expectations and positive reactions to her in the first place.

Why do I feel like that instead of getting people to like Glimmer this felt more like enforcing the few people who like Glimmers beliefs in the reasons they already like her. I highly doubt this would convince someone’s that didn’t like Glimmer.

Was anything in that link supposed to be realistically encouraging?
 
The flashback showing Starlight’s childhood shows her motivation for wishing everypony were equal.
 
The natural childlike response would be to dislike whatever it was that caused him to be taken away from her. We also learn that she never made another friend after that.
 
Which is ill-fitted with her cult leader personality and long list of grievences with the system that left Twilight without an answer. She did not become a single-minded villain who’s goal was to destroy cutie marks, she became a machievellian cultist and idealist regarding its how Celestia handles people with gifts suddenly announced on their rears.
 
And the assumptions regarding what happened after that in her childhood to prevent her from seeing him again are way WAY too numerous to count.
 
With her enemy continually trying her best to understand what she was going through..
 
Except Twilight didn’t. She kept on explaining what her ideals about friendship were and how they turned out well for her, and how they could turn out well for Starlight NOW, while ignoring what happened to Starlight in the past and what could happen to other ponies in the future.
 
The system Celestia has that singles out high potential magical students from friends and family still exists. Twilight’s first 12 or so years as Celestia’s student is living proof on how messed up Twilight was before Ponyville.
 
Starlight finally had to admit to herself that maybe Twilight wasn’t trying to ruin her after all.
 
Starlight is derranged, don’t get me wrong. She proved she was a villain when she enforced the cutie mark removal on the six. However, Twilight wasn’t offering any solutions to her issues with the system, only a support group after the fact.
 
Her magical ability is said to be on par with that of Twilight Sparkle’s. She can remove cutie marks, has spell blasts that equal Twilight’s, and is the first non-pegasus pony to be shown flying by using her magic. What more does she have in store?
 
Two times the over-hyped unicorn magic overshadowing the abilities of the other 5? And with her best friend, maybe 3? No thank you. Especially since her magical ability comes out of nowhere. __Overpowered abilities __ a badly written backstory is the formula for most bad OCs. There’s a reason for that.+
 
Will she become a good student in the magic of friendship, or will her past beliefs and mistakes continue to disrupt her on her path to harmony?
 
Considering she’s obviously way older and street smart then Twilight, the flaws in Celestia’s system she points out are ignored and not addressed, and her backstory has a near infinite amount of holes into it, its hard for most people to even care.
 
Or even to believe it. Twilight’s in no position to teach anyone; what took the other 5 main characters during or pre Season 1 to put themselves in another’s shoes emotionally, Twilight didn’t learn that until Amending Fences, and she’s hardly taken it to heart yet.
 
The sooner she reconciles with Sunburst and dissapears with him, the better. Most people’s hope for Starlight Glimmer was that the rushed montage of friendship would be retconned, and Glimmer would keep her S5 personality and her skepticism would help Twilight grow. Well structured ideals don’t disappear once you make a mistake, and while Starlight was deranged, she wan’t wrong about a lot of things. Heck, the citizens of her village sought HER out to get their cutie marks removed, and that was never addressed at all.
 
But the spoilers for the premier showed Starlight with a completely different personality.
 
but Sunset Shimmer neither
 
Why not? Unlike Twilight, she lives for herself and is a natural and charismatic main protagonist. RR demonstrated Twilight could grow SO MUCH learning from Sunset instead of Celestia, her reformed senpai instead of her portrayed-as-flawless sensei.

I don’t want Starlight like Mane7, but Sunset Shimmer neither. Starlight was a great antagonist and maybe her redemption was fast and her backstory motives were clumsy. But I’ll accept her with a great smile and a great improvement to Twilght and her mentor skills.

Jeezus, I was fine with the parallel names of Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer, but with Starlight Glimmer and Sunburst things are getting absolutely absurd. That’s another reason they shouldn’t be reoccurring. At this rate, the number of star and sky themed unicorns will outnumber all the other main characters. No thank you.

‘Cannot be fixed without more screen time’
 
The 2 minute premier just demonstrated that she’s starting out with her 180 personality change. We might have hints of her old issues resurfaced when Sunburst arrives, but there’s no salvaging the unjustified divide between her old personality and her new one.
 
That montage was never retconned, thus we now have a character with the same backstory and name as Starlight but a completely different personality that comes out of nowhere. Some things are beyond fixing.
 
“So was Luna’s”
 
Luna was a godly figure both in status and in power yet her subjects only loved Celestia. That resentment plus absolute power corrupting absolutely, made her backstory believable. Unlike Luna or Sunset, who had their negative emotions consume them until they were given a ‘mirror of truth’ rainbow spell that made their core innocent personalities see their own actions, Starlight was a mature and Machiavellian cultist who still has reasons to hate Equestria’s system.
 
Not to mention Starlight’s backstory is made of swiss cheese.

It was mostly unintentional, but yes, they can’t have someone around who is that unjustifiably dangerous, magically and mentally.

That makes no sense. The only reason they are introducing Starburst this soon after her backstory, who never existed prior to S6, is to give her story a resolution. Regardless of how ill fitting his story will likely be in context to the prior seasons, this gives Starlight an “out” to learn friendship with him instead of the main group, likely to be never seen again since’s she just a random filler unicorn with more power then Twilight when the plot demanded it.

When things were done right with Sunset in EG2 and EG3, and they didn’t have Sunset be happy go lucky at the end of EG1, the number of detractors decreased by an unbelievable amount. There are even bronies all over the internet that prefer Sunset over Twilight. (and with the star symbolism at the end of EG3, plus My Past is not Today, its not hard to see where we’d get that idea from Hasbro)
 
Tl;dr: Do not underestimate the importance of good writing.

I highly doubt that she’s a main character. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her occasionally starring as a secondary character, since she’s apparently Twilight’s new student. I thought they had made it pretty obvious from the S5 finale.
 
Also, I understand that some folks didn’t like how the S5 finale handled Starlight. That’s alright. Still, I don’t think anyone should be surprised that she’s returning.
