Life is very unpredictable, for better or worse. You can never tell how much time you have left, or what will happen in that time! “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”
Maybe that’ll happen one day. Who knows, I’ve got almost half of my life left.
That is very unfortunate, but trust me, good people exist. I’ve been bullied, mocked, ignored, cheated, cursed out, and generally treated not very nicely, but I’ve also known courtesy and kindness. I know someone who will comfort me when I’m upset. I have a neighbor who randomly bought my family a ton of groceries one day for no apparent reason. My parents say they went out to a restaurant one day and someone they never even met paid their bill for them and left before they could say “thank you”. I know a family with an elderly relative that they have vowed to care for, even though it’s a struggle every day, and they refuse to abandon her even though the whole world is urging them to lock her away in a nursing home.
You need a friend, and a true one, not just one who says they’ll be your friend and then you never see them again. (I’ve run into that, too.) I hope you find one, or have the chance to be one to someone else. The world can be awfully lonely if you have no one on your side. We should treat others as we wish to be treated ourselves.
I don’t personally know any humans who act on anything other than selfish instinct. Maybe it’s a result of my complete isolation from other people, but I haven’t met anyone who’s treated me as anything other than garbage or an object for their amusement.
People can be incredibly evil. They can inflict cruelties on their fellow man that most other people can hardly imagine. I was the victim of bullying when I was a kid, and I’ve run into not a few nasty people in my life. I’ve heard stories about one particular relative of mine who was a certifiably insane, terrible person who made his family miserable. I’ve heard that many people will ruin other people’s lives for their own personal gain, which is definitely evil. I’ve learned about horrible dictators in school (and here is the inevitable reference to Hitler) and other crazies who oppressed people and played the villains throughout history.
HOWEVER, not all of humanity can be condemned. While none of us are perfect, and plenty of us are bad eggs, we also have members of our species who are sweet and kind, gentle and loving, peaceful, honest, faithful to their spouses, family and true blue friends, loyal to the people who trust them to be there for them. Virtue exists, and there are good people out there, no matter how hard they are to find. They love others even when others hate them, and engage in extraordinary acts of generosity that only benefit others, not themselves. Not all people are entirely selfish, and some have the moral strength to put doing the right thing above their own survival. You can’t say this about animals, who only act on the instinct to survive.
Call me if you ever find a chimp who acts like Mother Teresa.
Well, there’s also the thing that happened some tens of thousand years ago when we evolved. That could happen again eventually. (Just without laser vision or lightning throwing. X3 )
Thankfully vertebrate species last no longer than 5 million years before becoming extinct. That is but an eyeblink in the lifespan of this planet, and here’s hoping that after we’re gone, time and erosion will wash away all traces of our culture and let nature reclaim the planet. The universe will never remember us.
It’s a love/hate relationship I have with my own species. I hate meaningless war, but I love games. XD
Is that supposed to make me feel better about all the evil we’ve committed throughout history? I don’t think you quite grasp how deeply I revile my own kind.
People can be incredibly brutal, barbaric, animal-like, but we are the only species with the capability NOT to be… We can rise above it. Reason is unique to us. That doesn’t mean all people CAN reason, but ONLY people can.
I can show you a collection of videos featuring Mexican narco-cartels and others with ISIS thugs torturing and murdering people in unique and brutal ways that would challenge your idea of civilization.
Do I detect the questioning of SCIENCE? After all, SCIENCE is settled, and can never be wrong, am I right? Forget that scientific beliefs have been constantly changing throughout history, and what used to be “settled science” is now laughed at. How arrogant our scientists are, thinking that they can never be wrong like us mere mortals! To question them is heresy, especially the great Saint Darwin the Infallible! I hear that some nutjobs in New York have now actually given chimps human rights “because science”, and if you think that’s weird, they’ll call you a speciesist bigot (and I did not make that up). All hail the poop flingers, our ancestors and brothers… Just don’t pay attention to how much more civilized we are, even at our worst… how we speak in countless, complex languages, wear clothes, and have concepts of morality… in short, how different we are from every other species in the world and how we have happened to clearly be the dominant species for thousands of years. Just a thought. Call me a hater if you will. It’s no skin off my nose.
But what little girl DOESN’T want to brush his luxurious, glossy, bouncy coiffure?
King sombra’s at the bottom of the villain heap, there’s a huge line ahead of him for demand :p
Probably in wave 2.
I almost want to believe that we can turn off our biochemical, hormonal responses to desiring violence. But I know we can’t. I know we’re all just monkeys, flinging poo at each other. Why even bother fighting the instinct anymore.
I agree with your statement, but I dont have an explanation for that. I mean genetically speaking, males have testosterone which does caise aggression. While estrogen does not.
@PonyPon
Humans in general like violence and action.
Because it’s the best visual shorthand for getting something done?
I’m still looking for an explanation as to why boys are supposed to inherently enjoy action and violence. Is it our testosterone? Personally I think it’s cultural conditioning.
