No, it’s worse than that. Luna and Nightmare Moon are the same person, right? Apparently in this story Luna/NMM’s split personality managed to occupy/manifest separate bodies somehow. But if Luna “falls into darkness”, then she would disappear and there’d be nothing left of the one pony they once were but Nightmare Moon.

The amount of damage done “for someone’s own good” is staggering. Seriously, it’s more often used to screw up than to help.
 
This part is a flashback, if you recall; Moony’s plan backfired horribly and is only hurting Luna MORE.
