When I mentioned the Elements I didn’t mean they were used in NNM escape I know it was the stars (it’s stupid to think the Elements had anything to do with her escape).
 
What I’m saying is in the timelines where Luna doesn’t show up is that when NNM returns their were no Element bearers to purify her back to Luna so Celestia was forced to KILL her sister.  
Except of course in the Nightmare Moon timeline where Celestia hesitate and was doomed for it.
 
And as for Luna’s appearance in the Discord timeline I already explained that.

I disagree on Nightmare Moon’s role in the Sombra timeline. The original battle could’ve easily taken place, considering that it was 1000 years ago. Also, her return had nothing to do with her return.

It’s possible that Celestia managed to beat NMM back, forcing her to retreat, only to insert herself into the Crystal War.
 
Imagine it: Celestia and Sombra engaged in another heated battle, neither side showing signs of backing down, when suddenly, a massive blast blows apart the warring forces. When the dust settles, we see a black alicorn with midnight blue armor.
 
Celestia: So, you’ve returned.
 
Nightmare Moon: Hello, sister. It’s been a while.
 
Sombra: What? Is that– It can’t be.
 
Nightmare Moon: Ah, so you remember me, so-called King of the Monsters.
 
Now the war has someone new in play. Nightmare Moon.
 
Will Celestia and Sombra work together to stop this foe? Will NMM side with one faction or the other? Will she form her own army and become a third-party in this war for dominance?
 
I think this is why the Crystal War is the most popular of the alternate timelines, what with the massive storytelling potential the setting possesses.

I have few theories on some of the timelines.
 
NNM didn’t appear in Sombra’s timeline or most of the others because there was no new Element bearers so Celestia had to end her threat once and for all.  
“You left me no choice sister.”
 
The Nightmare Moon timeline was the one where Celestia hesitated and lost.
 
Now as to why Luna was back to normal in the Discord time.  
I like to think that with Twilght not attending Celestia’s school she never meet Moondancer who never got upset about the party so she made friends who become the Element bearers and purified NNM.  
However when Discord broke free he played the same kind of games with these alt. bearers as he did with the Mane 6 and Moondancer was still as sensitive as in the prime timeline so they stayed broken up and Discord won.

A lot of them a like that when you really think about it. Like when exactly is the point of divergence from the prime timeline to X timeline? Did the NMM crisis happen in the crystal war timeline? Did the Discord crisis happen in the Dominion Changeling conquest timeline?

My favorite one’s gotta be the Ashlands one. It’s just positively begging for theories on what the frick actually happened. It’s just so creepy and depressing and I love it.
