I mean, yeah, thats what it is in context/in universe, but you really do not need to squint very hard at all to see a potential romantic relationship when they literally say ‘I love you’.
I was going to say something about platonic love, and then I laughed and laughed and laughed because I remembered how shipping works.
Just because you love somepony doesn’t mean you won’t want to strangle them if they turn all your worldly possessions into teacups.
I mean they did straight up say they loved each other. You can handwave it as “best friends”, but they broke out the L word.

It’s a little early to call for Starlight, and Discord is seeing how reformed he can be while still making Twilight want to tear her mane out (either he has a crush on her, or she brings back fond memories of pestering Starfleet captains), but Sunset Shimmer? That’s the big change.

Starlight, Sunset and Discord are making an actually effort to be good though. In fact Sunset has friends BECAUSE she learned to be nice.
