Headcanon: Any differences between what we saw of this moment in s05e26 and s06e01 are the result of Starlight Glimmer’s remembering it wrong. Memory is a tricky thing.

But wouldn’t he show Starlight first? Even if she was in the room when he got it, I would’ve thought that he would have celebrated with her before running outside. In the flashback, it shows he bumps into Starlight on his way out but doesn’t even stop to consider it.

Wow. I remember watching this for the first time and thinking that (yes, in addition to that being a pretty lame villain motivation) Sunburst’s special talent either wasn’t shown very well or was… pretty un-special. He… reshelves books? That’s it? For realsies? Every other “special talent unleashed” moment we’ve seen was impressive as the pony showed themselves the best there is at that one thing. Twilight the master magician! Fluttershy the beastmaster! Party Favor can make a working balloon bridge in like two seconds! Sunburst… that’s it? What’s his super cool thing, it really looks like he can’t do much.
 
But that turns out to be brilliant foreshadowing. The fact is… that’s exactly the point! The thing with the books was great precision at a power every unicorn has rather than anything wham-bam-zowie… like you might expect from someone with much knowledge but little actual magical power.
 
(As for him being a bad friend, are we really demonizing him based on the fact that when he got his CM, he ran outside excitedly to tell folks? Because that’s all we saw him do.)

Starlight meeting up with a (now grown) Sunburst would’ve made an awesome final scene. Unfortunately, I’m not sure the target audience would’ve picked up on it.

I wonder if Starlight is going to try and reconnect with him later on?

He was a kid, like @Background is Best Pony said, it’s not that unbelievable that his parents would take him elsewhere, perhaps to expand upon his talent, and in time they became separated over it, which is where Starlight’s misguidance stems from, separation during her childhood when she was still mentally young and naive herself, and clearly its had a lasting impact on her.
