Chara isn’t a ghost. Original Chara is dead, same way original Asriel is dead. What you’ve got is Chara’s memories after landing on the flowers, since that’s where they were buried. In True Pacifist run, the character asserts themselves as separate entity from these memories, Frisk. In Genocide, their Determination gives form to these memories as separate entity, like Flowey had been created with Asriel’s memory plus Determination. And they’re Determined enough to persist beyond resets.
Yes, I’m in fact a fan of the “Check and most of narration is Chara’s memories, because Frisk had no way whatsoever of knowing such things about Underground” theory, how did you tell?

It makes a lot of sense that Chara is represented that way in-game because HE’S DEAD and as a deadly ghost he can do a whole lot of creepy things like that face or possess the protagonist after you sold his soul to him to play the game again to get the best ending. Whether you consider him to be the gamer id or I don’t, he’s still a character in the game that influenced most of the plot of the game regardless of what route you’ve taken.

Well, there’s always the possibility that he did that just so he could have a creepy fourth wall breaking ending.
That’s true, and if it was any other character that would work fine. The problem is that Chara is not just an eldritch horror, he’s a personification of something very specific: the gamer id. He IS the desire for gold, experience, and new attacks, regardless of what is lost or killed in the process, that every RPG player experiences made manifest and given a personality. He’s not Sonic.exe, he’s an apotheosis of greed and power, even by his own admission.
I thought it was to emphasize the idea that whatever Chara was, she sure as hell wasn’t human.
Yeah, why DID the game go all Sonic.exe at the end? You’d figure Toby Keith was savvy enough to realize nobody takes Creepypastas seriouslu anymore.
Considering the mindset he’s supposed to represent, it certainly seems more appropriate than the escapee-from-a-bad-creepypasta vibe the game gives him.
I like this idea of smartass evil Chara. He’s like a mini Jan Valentine!
