Twilight patted her ear a few times in a feeble attempt to dispell the ringing. She smiled awkwardly. “That’s, uh, great, Pinkie…” A shiver ran down her spine as she realized how much Pinkie was already rubbing off on Applejack. Applejack had been a bit more… excitable lately. And enthusiastic. And loud. Twilight’s whole body trembled at the thought of how much worse it would be if they became sisters-in-law. It would be like having two Pinkie Pies, except much worse than the incident with the Mirror Pool because the second Pinkie Pie would be intelligent, permanent, have a southern twang, and Twilight couldn’t avoid interaction with her under the pretext of ‘it’s a clone.’ Twilight didn’t think her sanity could take it.

While it isn’t really incest, it still might pose a problem since Applejack and Pinkie Pie want their families to get along like family - they see each other as cousins regardless of the history and they want the rest of their respective families to bond and grow close too. If Marble Pie and Big Mac wanted to get into a romantic relationship that’d force both families to reassess how they see each other and probably even put distance between them, since it’s awkward to be both ‘cousins’ and in-laws.
They face the same problem that adopted or step siblings would face if they fell in love, the cultural role of family and how if affects other family members’ relationships (even to each other) is still a real issue.
They’re related through marriage by distant ancient 7th cousins removed.
