General Tag Discussion

Ah, is that what it’s for?
Yes, the tag description says so.
it should probably be made clear (if it’s not already) that it shouldn’t be used like the other slate of various “op is a duck” tags
The tag description already says so. To be clear: it already said so at the time I made the first reply.
Probably in the tag description, have it say something along the lines of “this tag should not be used to describe the Derpibooru user posting this image like the various other ‘op’ tags, but should instead only be used if it features a subject of the image calling another that slur, with the latter being designated ‘op’”.
You would have seen that the tag description explains these very points if you had taken even 5 seconds to check on the state of what you’re posting about.
at the very least it should probably be made clearHow would you propose that would be done?
Because tag descriptions only show up if the user seeks them out (eg. by hovering mouse over the tag to get the tooltip), the tag could be renamed something like “op is a faggot (phrase)”. This could be done for a number of similar tags, like “ur a faget”, “great and powerful”, “pone”, “lmao”, and several other tags that are for identifying words or phrases rather than to be applied as a reaction to the image.

No tags should be used as reactions to images, which I know is obvious to both of us. Just sucks how much this needs to be stated to people.

“wat” comes to mind as an officially-sanctioned reaction-to-image tag.
“we are going to hell”, too.

I was thinking the tags “murder”, “rape” and “torture” should imply the “violence” tag as well.
In addition “genocide” and “snuff” should imply “murder.”

op is a duck
is the tag that gets used here euphemistically because op was being an asshole by uploading this
or op is racist/sexist/anti-muslim/etc.
aren’t allowed for decorum’s sake, no matter how undeniably true they might be; it is fundamentally not the same thing as bitching about dumb meme imported from some other site 13 years ago that makes it look to a new fan like this place is full of creeps

Because tag descriptions only show up if the user seeks them out (eg. by hovering mouse over the tag to get the tooltip)
I keep forgetting this exists, but it’s a danged useful feature; maybe it would be more noticeable– and more likely to prompt better tagging– if the tooltip were bigger, or showed up quicker?

Still wouldn’t help anyone uploading from mobile, though, unfortunately.

Wait wait wait… Tags have tooltips with descriptions? Why don’t I have those? When hovering over tags, I only see the watch/filter/hide menu.

Are you hovering the tag name’s text, and not other parts such as the +/-, the count, or the padding?
Does your browser display <a> tags’ “title” attribute as a tooltip after hovering the link for a moment, which is how these are delivered?
Also, it works only when viewing the tag list normally, not during tag editing.

I’m stupid, I tried it on few random tags that happened to have no description. It does indeed work, TIL. Thanks.

Strong disagree. This single image is one of the most intelligent memes on the site today, or at any time. And high energy disruptive faggotry can be a powerful force for change. And with that, I will leave you with the wise words of the Taco Goddess.

I think it gets used if it’s being directly referenced in an image. Which a number of images do.
NightStalker
Well darn, the image that prompted this question from me in the first place has been deleted so now I can’t reference it…
Anyway, it’s good to know that it’s not meant to be used as a sleight against the actual OP, and that I should report this behaviour if it is being done.
…But at the same time, I do think it’s a little confusing and can be misleading to users.
OP is a duck
is meant to imply that the uploader is a ‘duck’, OP is trying to start shit
directly implies that the uploader is trying to start some shit… but then op is a faggot
is NOT meant to imply that the uploader is a faggot?Honestly, I personally don’t think we should have ANY tags that make reference to the image’s uploader. It has nothing to do with the image itself in most cases, and it can be used to insult the uploader or incite arguments. If a user of this site uploads an image, either it follows the site’s rules and is fine, or it doesn’t and it gets deleted. Do we really need to be giving out badges of dishonour to these people?
I’m guessing someone went through and cleaned up the tag, because when I looked at the search results before making my post there were a LOT of posts that didn’t even have the word ‘faggot’ anywhere in them or otherwise didn’t reference the phrase/meme (AKA, it was being used to refer to the uploader).
Maybe
op is a faggot (meme)
would be less confusing? Ciaran

Sometimes, the OP is a duck. And it can be nice to just filter those.

But at the same time, I do think it’s a little confusing and can be misleading to users. OP is a duck is meant to imply that the uploader is a ‘duck’, OP is trying to start shit directly implies that the uploader is trying to start some shit…
Using this image as an example, the OP does have a duck badge, and is literally trying to start shit. So much so that they’ve been repeatedly banned (and their next ban may be for life).
So, in cases like that, the tags seem not only appropriate, but a valid warning to others to just avoid the image if they don’t want to deal with someone else’s drama and attempts to create drama.
but thenop is a faggot

Please re-read the description of the tag. When used as a reaction image, it is not the OP of the image that is being referred to, but a lolcow in some other forum.
If you find images where that tag has not been appropriately added, or where the image it is on is breaking Rule #0, please report it.
Otherwise, if the image is not rule breaking, why shouldn’t people be able to avoid that phrase if they don’t like it or don’t want to see it or images that have it?

as an aside, there is also an
op is a duck (reaction image)
tag purely to differentiate said reaction images from actual duckery.as the
op is a faggot
tag is meant for instances of the old meme, and only for those, I can understand why the tag doesn’t have (meme)
or (reaction image)
in the name. I also completely understand the concern/request to add one of those to the name to avoid confusion/misunderstandings NightStalker

You have to remember, most people are not smart. We are the lucky few. If we are allowed to call OP a duck, we’re allowed to say OP is starting shit, we’re allowed to say op needs to stop, we’re allowed to say OP isn’t trying anymore, but we’re not allowed to say that OP is a faggot.

Yet to a purely cursory glance, we’re provided the tools (The existing tags) to do all of those things, including to call OP a faggot. I personally find that rather strange and misleading. Yes I know that the tag description specifies, but be honest with yourself…most people don’t read those. When I first saw the tag, I thought it was cut and dry, unambiguous and didn’t need explanation so I didn’t look at it (I saw “OP is a faggot” and thought, okay it’s calling OP a faggot, simple).
As yet another alternative suggestion, you could change the other tags to something along the lines of
uploader needs to stop
but leave the “meme” one as OP. Just something to differentiate them so it’s more clear that they have completely different usages. Ciaran

Agreed. Tags should describe the image. All other tags could be wiped, as far as I’m concerned. But it’s not my call, and doing so would take time and interest that I don’t have to spare right now. Maybe later.

Maybe adding newbie-confusing relic tags like
op is a faggot
and not salmon
or whatever to the Default filter would help? It would at least let people get used to the place and how it operates before assuming that every tag is a concrete thing with no history behind it.Actually I’m a bit confused at how many of the regular arglebargle catalyst tags aren’t in the Default filter already.

Why? There are 110 files tagged op is a faggot, and most of them are old.
Do people find the files accidentally and use them in comments?

I brought this up initially because someone posted some “Downvote Bait”, and another user tagged it as “OP is a faggot” despite having zero reference to the meme. They were using it as an insult, which led me to believe that the entire purpose of the tag was to insult the uploader.

I just discovered non-pony oc exists and already is implied by deer oc and dragon oc. Does it need to get aaaaaalllllllll of the other non-pony species oc tags to imply it?
Litrojia
I might’ve posted about this before, but is there a tag for images that exist just to show tag counts? I filter out a lot of them with derpimilestone (you can tell this tag wasn’t made by a regular user) and the complex expression “tags, milestone”, but a lot of these images aren’t milestones. I’d argue they should be against the rules for being pointless spammy garbage but that’s beside the point.
