this is likely a futile request but sometimes people arent harassing you or doing anything wrong, they just personally annoy you. it would be nice to be able to block someone who annoys you without having to report them

To what extent would we be able to block people? Would they just be blocked from sending DMs, or would they not be able to view your uploads, comments, and forum posts?
If this gets added shouldn’t there be some rule to prevent “everyone block X” attack posts/uploads? I’ve seen that happen on DeviantArt while I was there (it happened to me once).

preferably it would prevent the blocked person from DMing you and seeing any comments or forum posts? idk if the blocked person shouldnt be able to see images you upload, especially if they arent your own, since that could possibly increase the amount of accidental duplicates. however maybe it could block the person from seeing any art youve uploaded that you yourself have made and is tagged with your linked artist tag if you have one

Yeah it could increase duplicates if something isn’t done to prevent that but the blocked person should still be blocked from commenting on your uploads (unless for some reason you uploaded or used some of their art and then blocked the artist).

I doubt that would work since it’s easy to tell whether or not you’ve been blocked. The same goes for shadowbans. And someone can always just log off to comment on an image if they’ve been blocked by the uploader and/or artist.

Yeah just because you blocked someone doesn’t mean you can just attack them and make everyone else block them, and it’s worse if they’re being targeted for petty reasons like simply disliking a cartoon horse or calling a cartoon horse “waifu” or “girlfriend”.

There’s still an easy exfiltration leak: the blocked user sees posts replying to or quoting a post that they can’t see, so that clues them in to open an incognito tab to view the full conversation and respond likewise.

The one place where blocking makes sense is for uploads directly from the artist. If it’s an artist with a goldfish poop gang of haters, they should have the ability to disable anonymous comments and block named users.
Realistically, a mute list would be easier to implement. The trouble users would still post whatever nonsense they’re on about this time, but you’d never have to see it (barring the above mentioned metadata leaks from quotes and replies).

yeahhh that’s the unfortunate part of the idea, block-evading would be INCREDIBLY easy since derpibooru allows anons (like me! i’m a registered user but was too shy to have this idea connected to my account since i didn’t know how well-received of an idea it would be)
blocking dms would still be nice though, maybe there could be an option for users to turn off dms from anonymous users?

+1 to having the ability to block someone DMing you, anything else is excessive. This site is already so heavily moderated, I don’t see the need for anything more; mods are pretty quick to act on rule 0 stuff.

Reading all these comments, blocking users really would be useless given how easy it is to evade blocks, unless the site staff started requiring login to just browse the site and completely blocked Tor, VPNs, and anything else that could be used to evade blocks, but given how moderated this site is already, I feel all of this would do more harm than good. A mute list would be nice though (think filters but you’re hiding user activity instead of just uploads), although you’d still have to login for it to work but there isn’t anything that can be done about that.
That said, having the ability to block users from DMing you or even making a whitelist so that only site staff and users you trust can send you DMs could work. The latter would be preferable since users don’t have to worry about block-evading as much but either (or both options) would be great.
