I dunno about you, but going after the armed forces’ wallet doesn’t strike me as the smartest of moves.

As part of the Aluminum tariffs, all Chinese aluminum imports must be melted down and then re-smelted after it reaches US shores.
It’s literally the “Yo dawg” meme. “Yo dawg, I heard you wanted some aluminum I Beams. So I went and bought some aluminum I Beams then I melted them down and used the molten metal to smelt you some aluminum I Beams.” At expense of course.
So yeah, aluminum products being “just” a quarter more expensive was being hopeful.

Oh I agree that weaning off China’s teat would only be a good thing.
But as far as I understand the particulars of the tariffs, it’s only about aluminum imported directly from China. Any yahoo can set up a shell company or middleman in literally any other country and just buy Chinese aluminum from them, creating a worst of both worlds where we still rely on Chinese imports while still paying extra to cover the roundabout way to acquire them. So we don’t even get the benefit of investing in new domestic foundries, it’s just the status quo but with extra costs!
