Former head of the KKK David Duke has endorsed Jill Stein.
I approve of this because A) it makes sense. I like it when things make sense, and B) let’s be real. There’s a real chance this endorsement makes Stein look appealing to Republican voters.

David Duke likes Jill Stein.
Considering that Stein is the closest thing to an official Russian candidate, and Russia is the closest thing to a modern white supremacist country, it makes sense that a klansman would endorse her.

A Massachusetts high school student used an AI tool to “do the research,” for a class paper. The use of AI-generated material in homework, according to the school’s student rulebook, could constitute plagiarism, and that is what the student was penalized for. He was given a failing grade and detention, and was denied entry into the National Honor Society.
His parents, Jennifer and Dale Harris are now suing the school in federal court, stating that the rules against AI are too vague and penalizing their son has “caused irreparable harm.” They demand the removal of the zero grade from his record, a reinstatement of his B grade in the class, and his immediate admission to the National Honor Society. They further demand that school faculty and administrators “undergo training in the use and implementation of artificial intelligence in the classroom, schools and educational environment by a duly qualified third party not employed by the District.”
This is peak Karen shit.

I kinda side with the student here. Those penalties are kinda extreme. He should probably had been forced to redo the papers without AI/worked out an acceptable agreement with the teacher if AI use was integral to the papers and not just some cheap shortcut.
But I do think demanding that AI be accepted without question is too far in the other direction.
BlitztheDragon
I mean the detention was probably too harsh, but seriously, a lawsuit to force the school to admit him to the National Honor Society? C’mon.
Making him redo the paper without using a GPT or whatever he used is a possibility, maybe with a maximum possible grade of a B since he had to do it again?

Plagiarism is generally an automatic zero in any academic course worth the paper the lesson plan is written on. All currently-available AI tools are trained on stolen material, ergo an AI is incapable of NOT plagiarizing.
If this happened any higher up the academic chain than high school, dude would be damn lucky not to get his ass expelled for a stunt like that.

I also shared this story because it’s emblematic of the impossible situation our schools are in. Not just because of this AI nonsense, but because in recent decades it’s become in vogue for rich Karens to sue public schools when they do something to make their Special Little Pogchamp look bad on a university application, no matter how warranted it was.

I kinda side with the student here.
I don’t think the school went far enough. I’d have expelled him and made him repeat the entire year. AI is garbage and no one who uses it deserves to ever be in a society honoring achievement.

But what did the kid actually use the AI for?
But what did the kid actually use the AI for?
If it was to actually write parts of the paper, sure, OK.
But if it was for answering questions then… uh? Wikipedia is also made up of stolen material, so would admitting they used it for research be plagiarism?
All currently-available AI tools are trained on stolen material
Amusingly just today Adobe released their AI image generator trained exclusively on licensed and public domain works.

I’m just going to share this thread from Stephen Leuchtman on Xitter in full regarding the Montana Senate race.
I was talking to a Republican committeeman that I’m friendly with. Won’t say which county, don’t want to give him away. I asked about GOTV. He looked despondent. I asked him what was the biggest problem.“The Legislature and the SoS fucked us. They put a lot of people on the inactive voter file, and to become active, they had to either respond to the postcard, or provide proof of residence when they show at the poll.”That didn’t seem like a big deal to me. So I said “I thought you guys love Voter ID laws. What’s the problem?”His answer floored me. “The people without the ID in Montana aren’t minority and young voters. You can’t do anything in Montana without a driver’s license, so everyone has one, except for the anti-government nuts who don’t want the government to know where they are. They live up in the hills, the house and vehicles are in their wives’ names, and they don’t have any ID. Before, we let them vote with a mail to their address and register the day of. Now the legislature iced out 50-60k of our voters.”Now, this is just one man’s opinion, but I hadn’t really thought of it that way. A lot of these people turned up and voted day of in 2020, and then didn’t respond to postcards. Maybe they just showed up to vote for pot, but they voted solid red up and down the ballot. This year, they won’t be able to vote. Their vote won’t count. We only have a limited number of DMV locations (thanks GOP legislature) and they are booked until after the election. So no ID, no vote. It would be hysterical if Sheehy lost because of new voter laws.
