Tbh, Sonic and Mufasa are like the competitive Barbenheimer as opposed to Wicked/Gladiator 2 and the original Barbenheimer (Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie) which the internet didn’t pit against each other.
At least how I see double features on the same day.

Unfortunately Sonic is a niche franchise in some countries so it might not get much help worldwide. Fortunately a 4th movie was already announced so it doesn’t really matter who wins anymore.
Yeah, I finally got what Northern Haste meant now.

You’re right about that. “Sonic 2” made very little amount of money in Asian countries. It did pretty well in Mexico, Brazil, UK, and France, though. “Sonic 3” will have the edge in Latin American countries since the Sonic franchise is very popular over there, but it’ll struggle in Asia and Europe since the Lion King franchise is more popular over there.

When I think about it, the reason why video game movies don’t make a lot of money in the box office is because they fail to garner interest from the general audience. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) is the only video game movie to crack $1 billion worldwide, because the Mario franchise is one of the most popular and established IP to this day thanks to Nintendo making a ton of Mario games with excellent quality. Plus, the movie has a very simple plot and very enjoyable for all ages.

To a lot of adults, video games will always only be for children. Same goes for animation. Well, not realistic looking animation anyway. They probably look at Mufasa and think “Oh grown up things!” and watch it thinking it makes them seem more “mature”, while Sonic 3 gets shafted because they’d be like “baby game for babies!” toward it. That is especially prominent with Asian adults. At least that’s what it’s like with adults around me.

Ironic since Mufasa is still mostly for kids like Lion King but a superficial difference makes them feel like it is more mature.
Perhaps they deep down want that imagination that comes with animation but want to seem mature not by partaking in good stuff but by superficial maturity.
It explains the reasoning for ATLA live action series to “appeal to the Game of Thrones fans”

@Darth Prime
There’s anime-influenced / anime-inspired song, and there’s full on anime song but in english.
Rivals Till The End is the latter, right down to trying to force english words to fit the melody.
Edit:
Sometimes I wished MLP FiM woulda gone full anime. I mean, the character design is clearly anime-inspired.
Edit2:
Also everytime I talk to you or you talk to me, you give me attitude. Am I the Drake to your Kendrick or something? Damn, brother a simple “That’s the point” woulda sufficed, like Angrybrony there.
Edit3: You got me ranting unnecessarily.

Christmas Day was quite a day for movies in the box office. Ten movies have made over $1 million domestic yesterday. The movies are:
  1. Mufasa - $14.72 million
  2. Nosferatu* - $11.55 million
  3. Sonic 3 - $10.35 million
  4. A Complete Unknown* - $7.2 million
  5. Wicked - $5.4 million
  6. Moana 2 - $4.28 million
  7. The Fire Inside* - $1.69 million
  8. Babygirl* - $1.53 million
  9. Gladiator II - $1.49 million
  10. Homestead - $1.19 million
  • = New releases
-“Mufasa”‘s picking up pace in the domestic market, as it made over twice of what it made on Christmas Eve. It will easily earn the #1 spot in the domestic box office this weekend.
-“Nosferatu” earning #2 in the spot is a great news for horror movie fans. I expect this film do well in the box office since it acts as a great counter-program to the PG-rated movies that are currently playing in theaters.
-“Sonic 3”‘s Christmas Day bump is a head-scratcher. 38% bump from Christmas Eve is weak for a film that was released several days before Christmas. I hope it’ll do better in the upcoming days.
-“A Complete Unknown” is a film featuring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. This is another great counter-program to the family-friendly films.
-“Wicked” got a 66% bump on Christmas Day, because Universal released a sing-along version of the film last night. Its Christmas Day gross is higher than what “Frozen 2” made on the same day ($4.1 million).
-“Moana 2” got a 41% bump which isn’t too bad, but it’s lagging behind “Wicked” due to the film having worse word of mouth.
-It’s nice to see that “Gladiator II” is still in the top 10. Seems like there’s still some interest in the film.

Over the past few years, the movie business has suffered one setback after another. First, COVID shuttered theaters for months, prompting a wave of release-date delays, and halted filming on major movies, which only resumed with costly new health measures in place that added millions to budgets. Then, 2023 saw historic writers and actors strikes that scuttled production once again, resulting in another monthslong work stoppage as a fresh crop of films saw their opening weekends pushed back. All of this has left theaters with fewer films to showcase, which analysts believe is partly the cause of the decline in year-over-year revenues.
“We’re still in a post-pandemic recovery mode,” says Eric Wold, an analyst with B. Riley Securities. “It is taking time to get people to return to theaters and to have a slate that has breadth and diversity.”
So, what worked? Sequels and special effects-heavy adventures dominated the 2024 box office, while family-friendly films finally rebounded in a major way. Nine of the 10 highest-grossing worldwide releases were part of franchises (“Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Despicable Me 4,” “Moana 2” and “Dune: Part II” among them), while “Wicked,” the only original movie among the top earners, was adapted from a wildly popular 20-year-old Broadway musical that leans heavily on “Wizard of Oz” lore. That was in stark contrast to the previous year, when the top three releases — “Barbie,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Oppenheimer” — arrived without a roman numeral in the title.
“It seems like everything Hollywood is offering is a sequel, a prequel or a reboot,” says Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “But can you blame the studios? That’s what audiences are feasting on.”
When studios did try to launch original properties — or at least to produce movies like “The Fall Guy” (a reboot of a long-forgotten ’80s show) that weren’t part of long-established film series — they mostly struck out. Take “If,” Paramount and John Krasinski’s $110 million fantasy comedy, which faltered at the box office with $190 million globally, or Apple’s “Fly Me to the Moon,” a Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson-led “meet cute” that tapped out at $42.2 million worldwide — less than half its $100 million budget. Although the rise of streaming services like Netflix and the collapse of home entertainment offerings like DVDs have scrambled the economics of moviemaking, here’s some critical context: Exhibitors keep roughly 50% of ticket sales, so movies must double their production budgets and marketing expenses to make money theatrically. The reception of these films doesn’t make studios eager to take risks on properties that are untested.
“Audiences say they want original titles, yet they’re doubling down and supporting the safer options of titles they know,” says Disney‘s executive VP of global theatrical distribution Tony Chambers.

Perhaps audiences dont so much love old stuff as they think they at least know what they are getting.
After all something like Wish was new but it becsme highly unpopular. But no matter how mediocre Pinnocio reboot was you at least know what youre getting into mostly.
Covid might have made people want to be careful what they want to use their money for.
Hopefully this is a phase thst will die out sooner than later. Once all this 2020s chaos dies down, people might be more willing to see more new films.
