The scene still looked good, but it was a rehash of the first movie.

Really, think about it, this entire ending was a spectacular echo of the initial confrontation between Sunset and pony Twilight, and it shows just how Sunset has changed as a person. Rather than just being a stand-in for Twilight as the Default Protagonist, it even kinda shows just how different Sunset really is.
Agreed. What would have been a rehash is if A) Everyone hated each other again or B) Everyone hated Sunset again or both.
Inb4 Human Shimmer antagonist in EqG 4.
Yeah, but if they did that, then they wouldn’t really have a basis to make even more movies.
Unless of course the writers were given approval to come up with a huge and adventurous plot and break free from the “highschool-musical” mold, but really who would want that!?I am sure of it too. At the very least, it serves as a parallel to their first magical fight in the first film. With Twilight now about to cause mass mayhem and Sunset setting things right. Mostly by teaching Twilight the magic of friendship. Which also brings to a close Sunset’s major character arc between the three movies.
All it needed was an appearance by the Dazzlings and an answer to ‘where’s human Sunset?’ and it would have pretty much wrapped up most of EQG’s plot threads.
That, plus character development, answering the question of the other Twilight’s existence, adding a whole new slew of interesting characters, slightly expanding the EqG world (though it’s supposed to be “our”/the human world, so not much detail really needs to be given on that subject, necessarily), demonstrating and slightly explaining how magic works in their world, and overall being a more fun experience than an overplayed “prom queen” plot.
So wouldn’t necessarily call it rehashing, though yeah, they were very much similar in their ending themes.
