“Zero tolerance” bullshit is absolutely part of the problem, but I’m pretty sure the whole “blaming the tool for the actions of the user” angle is already trademarked by gun control advocates. And, as usual, reality doesn’t really back up your TOTALLY NOT A RACIST, BUT schtick:
 
►Across age groups, black students are three times more likely than white students to be suspended.  
►12% of black girls are suspended and 7% of Native American girls are suspended, a rate higher than that of white boys (6%).  
►Black students make up ~16% of enrolled students, but make up more than a quarter of all students who are referred to the police.  
►Native Americans make up one percent of enrolled students but two percent of the suspended.  
►Students with disabilities make up ~12% of the student population, but 75% of those restrained at schools; blacks are ~19% of the population with a disability, but make up more than a third of students who are restrained at school.  
►A team of Harvard researchers found that black boys faced harsher punishment because they’re often perceived as older than they actually are.  
►Over 70% of the students involved in school-related arrests or referred to law enforcement were Hispanic or Black.  
►A 2009-2010 survey of 72,000 schools (kindergarten through high school) shows that Black students made up 18% of enrolled students, but accounted for 35% of those suspended once, 46% of those suspended more than once and 39% of all expulsions. In districts that reported expulsions under zero tolerance policies, Hispanic and Black students represent 45% of the student body, but 56% of those expelled under such policies. ►A 2015 study of schools in Texas and The South found that in 181 school districts where blacks represented just under 60% of enrollment, all of the students expelled during 2011-12 were black. And this one, where a girl was charged with a misdemeanour - charged mind you, not merely arrested - and suspended for an entire year for having a tiny paring knife in her lunchbox.
 
Or a kid suspended for a year for having a leaf that the police decided looked like pot. They charged him with a felony despite the fact that the leaf was tested and found to not be anything of the sort.
 
It isn’t the 1950s or whatever time you were in school, tex, when you could blow shit up and everyone would laugh and call it cute. Kids are getting arrested for stupid shit all over the place. Calling this one incident racist against a general background of even stupider incidents that are categorically not racist only shows how willingly you shape the world to your own prejudiced narrative.

I blew up my Biology teacher’s desk with improperly mixed flash powder and only got suspended for like two days and dropped from the academic competition team. There were actual injuries involved– me and another guy still have scars.
 
I ain’t got time for fools try to say there wasn’t any racism involved in that kid gettin’ arrested for having a kitbash clock in a carrying case.

And then Derpy was expelled from the school for making a bomb disguised as science project.
