Of what I read about Araki’s comment, I think I didn’t describe it that well to you initially.
 
Araki said that he originally made ‘Jonathan too pure of heart without displaying any weakness of that heart.’
 
Its hard to explain, but I think I understand what he means…..  
Jonathan is an awesome guy, has ‘the heart of a gent’, and is an idealist that people CAN respect, but he was only a reactive hero. He wasn’t small hearted, he was ‘weak-willed’. At least, compared to his descendents. Him ‘stepping up’ is often very dependent on others, and he is the type to learn his fears and summon his courage each time. Heroes like Joseph and Jotaro are people who OWN their fear and have that courage on instinct.
 
Don’t get me wrong, Jonathan does have some charisma, he’s no Shinji Ikari. But what I think what Araki was trying to say was that he didn’t match the respect he was getting with the actual badass charisma he didn’t have in spades. He was put on a pedestal too quickly. Araki, in hindsight, wanted to explain why Jonathan wasn’t going to be the one to end Dio. How his descendants would improve in different ways.
 
To compare, Jonathan is like the old boy scout interpretation of Superman was back in the way, and how heroes and their characterizations evolved over time represents the new jojos. And who is that version of Superman most compared to as an archetype? Jesus. So in a sense you are correct. But that archetype felt out of place later on in Jojo.
 
As for Jotaro, I’d have to agree. Sunset would be far better fit. RD too if we include the Mane 6.

He said what about Jonathan? Weak of heart? That motherfucker changed the ways of everyone he met. A career criminal? loyal forever to the joestars even after death. A vampire that sold his soul to the devil? Happily acended to heaven after fighting Jonathan and flowers grew where he died… in the desert. Weak heart? He is the strongest jojo in terms of heart! His stand is named The Passion, the only way of getting more Jesus than that is literally being Jesus. You know what, this is the last straw, i’m going to track Araki and shank him. That will teach him to create Johnny Joestar and a Speedwagon that isn’t related to Jojo.
 
 
And about sunset… i see her more like Jotaro than Jonathan. And Starlight as Giorno

Araki described Jonathan as ‘someone who tries to be a good guy but is too weak of heart’. Even though Sunset is older, Pony Twilight seems to be perfect fit.

I’m amused that Starlight’s holding her ice cream sandwich so it looks kinda like an equal sign.
 
And that Moondance is holding her popsicle the exact same way Twilight is.
 
Sunset’s not doing anything particularly funny, but she’s still cute.
