Eh, RD isn’t really a good second in command.
 
She works well as a leader IN HER SPECIALITY (like sports or weather teams), but the second you give her a task outside her comfort zone it all falls apart. Look at Princess twilight sparkle: all she did was yell and argue at applejack, and in dragonshy she almost got the entire team eaten due to impatience.
 
AJ’s the only one who seems to stay calm and think on their feet (Like keeping the fake crystal heart a secret in the crystal empire).

I think Rainbow dash actually has a pretty good chance of coming in close to first place in most “favorite mane six” polls. It used to be higher in season 1/2, but then plummeted. Its only really recovrered lately, and that’s more due to twilight’s popularity dropping by comparison (to the point that twilight can actually lose favorite polls again)

AJ’s fine as short-term replacement, but it’s RD who looks ahead and sets ambitious goals. You leave AJ in charge if you want to see things exactly the way they were before. Rainbow, I think, is the one to keep them in motion. Cooperation between the two would probably work best, but how do you get them to agree on anything?

Definitely. Rainbow Dash is good at being both a voice of reason when acting as the second in command to Twi, or making better leader actions herself. And when it has come to giving inspiration, direction or common sense, RD’s always been the leader, while Twilight’s strength of leadership is instruction. (Like Jim Miller said, Twilight is the Cyclops, the mouthpiece leader) Human RD can still inspire the other 5, and she also takes charge, but her adaptable leadership is very lacking compared to pony RD, who has grown so much she could easily be the leader if Twi finds leadership too stressful.

The fact that she also a ton of genri-savviness, empathy both kids and adults can perceive, and experience of leading hundreds makes her a bit overqualified for second-in-command. (Human Rainbow Dash, naturally, is a lot less developed then Pony Dash, and probably would fuck it up anything higher. Which makes sense, she acts more like early S2 Dash.)

I’m not terribly fond of her myself, especially after the guitar string incident. Could it be though, that she wants to inspire others to greatness by being awesome herself?

….and yet still gets so much hate, only because of letting her ego overrule her.
 
Also, I’m glad the other Mane 6 characters have leader-like characteristics, not just Twilight.
