Yeah, looking at the trend, comic orderings by shops have at least generally gone up overall. It honestly is a bit sad seeing the MLP comic overtime slowly decay until seeing it break 20k is a rarity. Compared to other comics by the monthly sales charts, that’s pretty low, and some of the higher ones have been running for quite a while.
A trade paper back volume costs about four times as much as a single issue (and also contains four issues).
Therefore sales figures for trade paperbacks are multiplied by four. If 500 TPBs are sold in a month, the bar would go up by 500x4=2000 sales.
@Background Pony Number 17
How comparable is this to other comic series, though?
There are many different ways to answer that, and they all involve a hugeantic amount of data mining.
As far as strict sales numbers go, according to Comichron, the TL;DR answer is: Not very favorably. There are a loooooootttttt of variables in play– too many for any advocates for or against to make very many assertive declarations that couldn’t be factually challenged– but in general the comics industry as a whole is doing slightly better now than it was when the IDW comics debuted, and kicking out the curve-destroying mega-hype 1st Issue, other comics of similar longetivity seem to have not had quite the same dropoff. In general, SALES DECLINE is to the comics industry as ENTROPY INCREASES is to physics, but the main IDW comic has declined a little more than the (extremely) rough standard for comics in their early 30s.
Gonna have to wait until mid-September for both those numbers.
And then we’re back to square 1 with the last issue of Ponyville Days, which is just more than 17k. Curious to see how this current arc sells.
Even the least sold FIENDship issue sold more than than issue #29, so even if you look at them individually it is an increase in sales over the previous month.
Because those are 5 issues. Individually they sold 20-17k.
That is not really proof. If you could link to an article or video interview with someone who works writing for comics saying there is a stigma against MLP that is all it would take to prove it.
@Darth Sonic
They will probably do another miniseries event like that in the future.
Ah. I thought you were talking about both. My bad.
Still, dat FIENDship sales spike…
The cartoon industry and the comics industries are quite different in terms of what gives you respect.
Yeah… Gonna need some proof here. Pretty sure FiM at least garners some respect in the animation community.
No data for digital, and even the physical sale numbers are supposedly inconsistent with how they count variant covers.
I think it’s more that’s it’s been a steady drop for years. Drop when first starting is expected, but a drop over years (now dipping below 20k regularly) is not good news.
Also notice that the more problematic arcs have some pretty obvious dips (aside from deer because there was a strike). And quite a lot of long runners have been selling much more over time.
Not professionally respected as a franchise?
It’s more that having MLP as a whole on a resume is bad.

About what I expected, though not as vitriolic as I expected… at least not yet; the night is still young.
For what it’s worth, a slow steady decline in sales is expected in this medium. Every comic series suffers it regardless of its quality. There’s always going to be people trying out the first issue or the first part of an arc, deciding they’re not interested, and dropping it. Same thing happens with anime series, particularly in the West.
I’m legit surprised that the compilations have been selling, since they’re not any cheaper than buying individual issues.
Writers get tired, especially when they’re kept on as tight a leash as Hasbro seems to put on IDW. It would be nice to get some new blood into the series, but I’ve seen the Usual Suspects insist that Curnow is unable to get new writers because nobody wants to work on the series (the implication of course being that MLP:IDW sucks a$$ and would be a black mark on anyone’s résumé). Given the messengers, I need more proof before I can take that at face value.
Even I, a staunch supporter of the comics, am considering dropping my subscription. Not because I hate the series like the Usual Suspects do, but because I’ve got other things - hobbies and real-life crap - that need my attention and money more.
The purple bar is the Fiendship series which focused on the villians.
Bleh, just noticed the name was fiend. Stupid phone screen.

What?
My post had nothing to do with writing skill.
My point was that, even if you are the most talented writer in the world, you could not get into DHX and writing for MLP unless you know someone already there.
The comics could very well have the same conditions because of Hasbro.
Given the quality of the comics, I can’t expect that it takes much skill to get in :I .
Do you really think someone could just roll up and say “I wanna write for this plz” and get the job? That’s not how it works for the show at least, it’s pretty much impossible to write for MLP if you don’t know the existing writers. I even saw them tell someone “write for other TV stuff then try applying to write for G5” to someone asking about spec scripts.
