I’m pretty sure it’s actually meant as a visual pun. One of the styles of goaltending is literally called ‘butterfly style’, which makes use of the goalpads, thus Fluttershy’s pads together forming a butterfly.
But their ears are right where they usually are.
I don’t know, a Butterfly mascot might not be that bad.
Float like a butterfly, sting like a… butterfly.
