Yeah, the wheel of turrets thing is the final boss on the Atari ST version of R-Type.
I know there’s a static version of it on level 1 of the original game too.

I remember it also changing into the “wheel of turrets” from the first level of R-Type. And I think it turns into a meaner, black version on the second loop. I love that Irem actually added a hardmode, just to extend the challenge for hardcore shooter fans.

I’ve always been a shooter fan (also from the UK), although I’m not actually any good at them. ^^

I actually bought R-type 3 when it came out on the Snes. I still have the old console and around 40 games for it. All still in good working order.
Of course, this means I can’t save any progress.
I still love fighting the level 5 shape shifting boss. Somehow it makes getting past level 4 and the stage part of level 5 worthwhile.

For those that don’t know, the bosses it changes to are
1- amoeba (Can’t actually kill this)
2- R-Type 1 first boss. (I always think it looks like it’s cursing you when it dies. “No more mister nice-guy!”)
3- R-Type 2 4th boss (I think)
4- R-Type 1 2nd boss
5- R-Type 1 final boss from the Atari ST version. (I have the game on a PS1 disk, and the last boss is different)
6- turns back in to the amoeba and then you can finish it off.

I used to be very good at shoot-em-up games. Bit rusty nowadays though. When I got hold of Thunderforce 4 on the megadrive, I completed that on my first play through. Thunderforce 3 went the same way (Jap cartridge with a converter. (I’m in the UK).

Oh my gosh. The number of rants I’ve had about the backwards-lava-maze bit. XD
I’m a huge fan of R-Type in general, but R-Type III has a special place in my heart because it’s one of the few games I’ve played to absolute completion without cheating. I played it on a SNES emulator and I only allowed myself to use a save-state at checkpoints - which meant a good 30-40 attempts at the lava maze bit, because I had to do it all in one go. And then again on the hardmode loop!

R Type. Now there’s a game I’ve not played in a while.
I vaguely remember trying to play through that mini game on R-Type final on the PS2 where you can’t control your fighter. You just pick which fighter you want and hope it doesn’t die before the enemy one.
Never did get very far on that one.

Might dig out my old copy of R type III for the old Super NES which I still have set up.
I managed to complete that within 3 weeks of getting it. (Level 4 gave me a hard time where you have to fly backwards through the maze with the molten metal(?) flowing through it after the mid-level boss).
