I put this under the category of a visual effect. The point is that he was trying to get to the building but it exploded before he could. The way they got that message across may have been unrealistic, but the dramatic effect carried through well this way. Seems like too much of a nitpick to complain about a shot that’s less than five seconds long.

Hiro should be dead, not only does he get caught in the explosion, which would almost definitely kill him, and if not, seriously injure him. And, he gets launched back, which would cause lots of damage, if not some broken bones. Also, when he gets launched back, the scene is in slow motion, but you can see the fire from the explosion going faster than Hiro, which is why the screen goes white. But Disney’s a bitch and ignored all logic just so that the main character would survive. Still a good movie, though.

What followed after those 2 lines still freaks me out. I kinda expected Baymax to go rogue, but seeing that scene in action really shooked me.

Eh, it didn’t strike me as being much bolder a move than any other parent/guardian death in a Disney movie. They do this kind of thing all the time. I was more impressed (and unsettled) by a certain two words later in the movie.
 
“Baymax, destroy.”

When I saw that scene in Big Hero 6 my first thought was. “HOLY SHIT GRIMDARK, YES!”

Jesus! The blast was SO powerful, it transformed Twilight into a 3d animated human male, moved her down the steps so she/he’s not next to the door and changes the entire layout of the building.
