True. Also, putting the Princess of Lecturing next to Gilda of all people would likely result in a FAR more extreme case of “Shut up Twilight” then Starlight gave.
 
Barring a suicide or a homicide, Gilda would just have her hands over her ears the entire episode.

We can think of this as prevention of deus ex machina situations like in the season opener with Spike, but I honestly think this is just a way to play off certain characters’ chemistry with each other.  
This is a good thing. It’s something we very rarely see on a whole-episode scale between just two characters.
 
 
We may just have to take this one at face value guys.

Twilight probably would have been able to teleport into and out of the abyss, and retrieve the idol, which would have completely circumvented the lesson the griffons needed to learn, which is that a friend is more valuable than gold.
