Old English/German origin, meaning “gilded”. And gilded is a word meaning “covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint”, if taken literally, or more metaphorically, something given a “specious or false brilliance” - i.e. It looks good, but is actually just skin deep, a false front.
 
When she first appeared, I took her name to be a clever allusion to the fact that she wasn’t as good a friend as she was first appeared. I guess I was wrong about assuming how common that perception was.

For some reason I could have sworn she had red highlights when I first saw this scene.

So the real reason Gilda’s saving up her bits to leave Griffonstone is so she can go somewhere to get a beak-job.

Well, Gilda has existed in design since before the show even started, drawn up by Lauren Faust herself. All the new griffons seem to have a better birdlike shape to their beaks.

The key is the beak I believe, Greta’s is far more shapely than Gilda’s.

Greta was a name that the fandom came up with for one of the athlete griffons, it’s pretty cool that they ended up using it for a canon name!
