There’s a bit from Stargate I think applies very well in this situation.

Yeah that ain’t happening anytime soon. Her Past may not be Today, but she clearly still feels the weight of every awful thing she did over the years. That weight is not easily lifted. Twilight sure can’t do it. I figure even Celestia may not have that power. Besides, you can’t forgive yourself until after the people you wronged have forgiven you, which they haven’t.
 
At least Twilight is attempting to help rather than lecture or preach.
