I think of them as different ponies, like two guys named Bob or something. Though yeah, it does make no sense for the writers to do that. But they’ve done it before and since. (Twilight and Twilight, Golden Delicious and Goldie Delicious, Cloudchaser and Cloud Chaser… but none of those are quite this blatant.)
 
What’s funny is, Cheerilee 2.0 looks very much like the earlier G3 pony Cherry Blossom. So in the comics, G4 Cheerilee, who’s based on the second G3 Cheerilee, finally has her twin sister Cherry Blossom show up… and they drive each other nuts. Brilliant.

Core 7 Cheerilee freaks me out, because they cut off her horn! A generation reboot is one thing, but the Core 7 had flashbacks to other G3 events. What happened to Cheerilee, the Unicorn Princess from Unicornia?
