Fun fact: the tail gun on the B-52 was later removed after a friendly fire incident where a HARM missile locked onto the gun’s radar and seriously damaged the aircraft (both the crew and the plane survived).

Also contributing was the fact that the gun had only ever shot down two planes, and the odds of that happening again dwindled as missile technology got better.
