Actually, I just went to the source, and it’s tagged ‘candyring’, so yeah, I guess there’s a good reason we thought it looked like a ringpop. It is one.

From looking at the tags over on deviantart, it would seem that Rarity’s ring is intended to be a ring pop. Our initial reactions seem to be well-founded.
