Some dope in the audience at a pony panel (I forget which) flat-out asked a few of the primary FiM writers whether they planned for Rarispike to be an official, onscreen thing (y’know, like Cadance & Shining Armor). They said “nope, Spike’s still a bit young,” of course.
Furthermore, how does crush-to-legit-friendship really qualify as ‘stagnation’ or ‘so problematic something must be done’? Pretty sure that panel reaction was just reassuring the simpleminded that no, they’re not hooking up kids with whatever-age-bracket-you-headcanon-for-Mane-Sixers onscreen. Which any watcher with half a wit already knew. Color me amazed the question even needed asking.
Yeah, it’s rather unlikely they’ll ever really fully address the issue. It’s more of a running character identity/gag/theme that’s easy to utilize in writing so it’d probably stick around for the remainder of the series.
I really doubt there be more romance in the show.
My Little Pony always be about friendship not romance and I think its better that way.

What? The writers finally addressing the Spike/Rarity ship definitively and/or trying to put an end to it after their reaction at Babscon?

Yeah it has stagnated. They need to do something with it one way or the other, and I’ve had a feeling for a long time that might be coming in season 5. And, based on staff reaction when asked about it in that infamous panel I think they’re going to do something to officially put an end to it, either by having Rarity seriously talk to Spike or giving him a new love interest or something. I guess we’ll see.
Sorry for being too sudden with this analysis because Sparity/RariSpike/whatever needs a good canon follow-up.
