You’re right but at the same time there has always been a huge debate on “Laïcité” of the country.
That law itself has been debated to hell and back and is still is today, even more after the charlie attacks.
And funnily many feminists organisations pushed for the ban on Burqa, as they feel it restricted freedom of women and they feel many of the women wearing it are pressured by their husbands in doing so.
All I want to say it’s a very debated subject and it shouldn’t be enough to call the entire country full of assholes. Yes we have a big rise of the far right party here, but so does the rest of europe, and the rest of the country as extremely worried about them as you are (a recent election where they almost got a seat at the senate was extremely mediatized.)
