She does get the power, around halfway through, to pick locks with magic, but it still needs a learning curve for Pip. It’d be pretty much what JustTheBast said, with the manipulating pins and all that. It pretty much says so when she first tries it.

They’d need really fine control to reach inside the keyhole and lift each pin to the correct height and hold it there. Plus they’d need to be able to feel the shape of the pins to determine what the correct height even is - I’m not sure if it has been established whether unicorn magic has sensory feedback.

No, not really… According to the canonical fic, even though LittlePip could lift train cars with her magic, ripping apart a safe was well beyond her. I think the logic was something along the lines of: Levitation was magic that mostly worked by negating gravity. So it couldn’t be used to just conjure up arbitrarily large forces that would yank the safe apart.
