Atlantis: The lost Empire was a box office failure.  
Titan AE was one.
 
And both were great movies.

Actually, James Gunn wrote the two theatrical Scooby Doo movies, and produced the second one, but he didn’t direct either. Which, IMHO, makes his success with Guardians of the Galaxy all the more unexpected.
