Not everything that happens in an episode of a TV show is determined by the writer. The writer doesn’t write the characters facial expressions and they don’t write a lot of the visual gags,.

Castle Maneia was, in my opinion, a dull episode. Nothing bad, just didn’t make me laugh or anything.
 
Let’s see, and these are off the top of my head so forgive me if I forget some scenes, Ticket Master had Applejack sticking back to see Spike get his ticket and chuckling at his enthusiasm.
 
Over A Barrel, when the group, gets back together, Applejack is the only one to run to Spike. (Not even Twilight.)
 
A Dog and a Pony Show, Spike almost kisses her. She thinks its cute.
 
A Canterlot Wedding, she kind of scolds him a bit, motherly of course, about playing with the cake figures. (Which is a good reason too. She’s putting a lot of effort into the cakes.)
 
Princess Twilight Sparkle, she runs up to Spike and holds him dearly after he falls down the stairs.
 
This scene.
 
Their episode together. (Even though ‘Spike At Your Service’ had Spike incredibly clumsy (and pretty stupid cause he almost fell for the timber wolf disguise if not for the smell) It still was nice to see them interact for an extended period of time.)
 
I know there are probably more, but those are the only ones I can think of now.

The episode was fine for the most part. I meant this gag specifically. It’s bad writing PERIOD.

‘Bad Quality’ errr…It made some poor choices….some really poor choices, but its highs were some of the highest of the show. I honestly think its my favorite season so far.
 
And yes, I’ve the signs way back in 2011. (Ticket Master has, to what I believe, the first real interaction between the two.)

Poor writing for a trash gag in some seasonal joke.
 
Yeeea, this is when the show started showing signs of bad quality for the season.

Applejack seems to care the most about Spike, besides Twilight. (Notice how she’s always nice to him, scared for him, and is the one to rush to his aid.)
