Wow, I’m a pretty serious grammar pedant and didn’t know about that one. I think I agree with most commentators that ‘initialism’ is fading to the point that ‘acronym’ will soon be, if it is not already, the proper term for the entire class.

also, R.I.A. isn’t an acronym, it’s an initialism. as the definitions go: “An acronym is an abbreviation formed from the initial components in a phrase or a word.” (examples: NATO, Scuba, Laser, Taser)  
and  
“an initialism is an abbreviation consisting of initial letters pronounced separately (e.g., CPU ).”
 
i wouldn’t say lyra’s mistake is bad considering this is a not-so-well-known fact, so it’s understandable that she wouldn’t know
