He needed Discord to even begin his plan. Considering how many beings he had to drain magic from, it probably would have taken him a ridiculously long time to do things by himself, and he’d probably be foiled by then.
 
To the people bringing up G4 Tirek absorbing G1 Tirek’s magic, remember during his battle with Twilight when G4 Tirek absorbed all those blasts being fired at him? No? That never happened? Not even once?

Granted, Twilight did try to flat out kill Tirek at first. If he didn’t fight her to a standstill, she would have killed him.

In short, Megan is more badass than Twilight. She killed her opponent for good, mainly with just good teamwork, while Twilight just sealed her opponent away for an indeterminate amount of time, since her opponent made a critical mistake. Not to mention, Megan undid her enemy’s damage, while Twilight replaced the stuff that was damaged.

Let’s look at the details.
 
G1 Tirek: dies because of Mr. Moochic giving Megan the Rainbow of Light, and Scorpan helping fight. Megan’s Rainbow of Light is enough to repel Tirek’s Rainbow of Darkness. The light consumes Tirek, he dies (in a graphic fashion, as graphic as you can get in a little girl’s cartoon), and everything he cursed turns back to normal, including Scorpan, who’s actually a human prince.
 
G4 Tirek: doesn’t die, but gets sent back to Tartarus after being blasted by the Rainbow Power. Tirek could have won, that is, if he didn’t give Discord his brother’s amulet. But nope, he gave it to him, and it bites him in the flank. Twilight didn’t have any remorse about sending him back to Tartarus, after he destroyed all of her books and her home. You could pretty much say that the good guys won because of Scorpan’s actions.

You could also say that the G1 Tirek made the rainbow of darkness because it was his only way to defeat others, aside from standard brute force. And if he had to use that, then he wasn’t all that strong.

Exactly, since we weren’t shown the original getting attacked by anything other than the RoL, it is possible that nothing else could stop him, and if Rainbow Power is basically the same thing, G4 Tirac would have nothing to throw at him. The fact G4 Tirac started fighting would imply he could have beaten without marketable plot device #26

I just assumed that “Rainbow Power” WAS the Rainbow of Light, or at least the counterpart.

You have to remember though, G1 Tirac was attacked by his own bane, whereas G4 wasn’t. For all we know, G4 would to have to use the Rainbow of Light, which would probably kill him as well.

I agree. G1 Tirek had no powers other than his brute strength. He relied mostly on his forces and the Rainbow of Darkness to do the dirty work. I don’t think he had to, he just preferred not to get his hands dirty.
 
G4 Tirek however preferred to be out there in the action, doing as much as possible. He only relied on others when he had to and discarded them when they were of no use.
 
In a fight, g4 Tirek has the advantage because he has magic and was able to take a beating.
