I can’t say I had experience with depressed people a lot, but I had a friend who was scared shitless (she actually had a phobia) when she had to present something in class. But because I myself was shy, too, I tried to suppress my own fear of presenting and tell her it wasn’t so bad.  
It sorta worked. Maybe I should’ve given her a hug…

I’ve talked with depressed/drug-addled chicks. The hugs are more to seal the deal and finish up a conversation. That’s when they start to feel better.

I’m not keen towards hugs, I find them to be too over-used.  
It feels vague to use them to cheer someone up.  
I prefer the classic talking.
