Perhaps, or we could just say that this, and the comic cover (which seems to be a nod to “Muppet Babies” judging by the window) are just an A.U.
Or the Mysims series of games are kind of the same way. Same character at same ages but different plotline in each game.
So it’s feasible that next gen Mane Six will be childhood friends.

The comic covers aren’t usually canon either. (In fact, most of ‘em actually have nothing to do with the story inside, much like that one.)
