From what I’ve heard, the human body, when asleep, drifts into various states:-  
shallow, medium, deep, medium, shallow, medium, deep… etc
 
by not allowing “outside” wakeup stimuli (which would have kicked you out before you were “ready”) your body “surfaced” naturally during a shallow sleep stage.

Wallet After Summer Sale -

The other day I had had enough of shitty sleep and turned off all lights and computer at 21:00 or so before getting to bed (normally try to go sleep 22:00-6:30).  
Woke up at frigging 5 in the morning and couldn’t get back to sleep… but then I discovered I wasn’t sleepy at all, at any part of the day. Felt very strange.
