They are still dogs though.
Literally called diamond dogs.
The fact they are humans instead of dogs is still jarring.
The whole “dragons are dogs instead of humans” crap really made no sense, especially since dragons are clearly truly sapient as other creatures such as ponies. If a creature from Equestria is truly sapient and can talk(like ponies, Donkeys, Diamond Dogs, Dragons, etc), then they should be human. Not reduced to something that is lower than a human.
I say the writers did not think this through when they thought it was funny to make Spike a dog like that.
In the long-run it screwed him over that he’s a dog instead of human though.
Also I am pretty sure they can just show the human girls the portal. That alone should tell them that Twilight and Spike are not from the human world.
Edited
Neither are they real dogs, for that matter. Winona is a dog. They’re dogs in the same manner that Iron Will is a bovine.
Think she’ll ever get an episode? ;)
@Background Pony #A105
Also, you got scratched under the chin by Human Rarity. I’d think that would make the experience worthwhile for you. ;)
surprised no one gave OP a straight answer yet. oh wait, no not surprised at all.
I find what they did with the diamond dogs more offensive to mexicans than to dragons.
I wish I could say this wasn’t true.
Everything makes sense now.
No he’s not lying, and yes it is pathetic.
Sadly, a sizable portion of this fanbase is made up of people who’re so overly attached to these mares, that they instinctively hate any male that shows up and/or whose attitude can seem threatening to either their self-insert ideas or their lesbian fantasies.
But of course, unless you can hide behind among the endless hordes of anonymous, then expressing blind hate for someone who obviously doesn’t deserve it is seen badly, so the next step is making up an acceptable excuse. Thus, the “I hate him because he’s a badly written character” reason was overused and blown out of proportion.
Its not unique to this fandom, but its extremely obvious in it.
I love dragons. I love Spike. But dammit Spike fans are really starting to annoy me, worse than Fluttershy fans.
You wanna talk about a character who get unfairly treated by both the show and the fandom? Try being a Celestia fan since S1. I swear to fuck if it’s not one thing it’s another.
Ever wonder why all of the female characters on shows like that tend to be shit?
It’s so female fans can use them as a self-insert most of the time.
It doesn’t make it better.
It just explains why there are so few female characters on Supernatural. ;)
It’s a trend that’s not new to FiM or done exclusively by male fans if it makes anything better. But it is very real.
I want to say you’re lying.
But sadly, you’re not.
Heck Braeburn/Soarin’ is popular for the sole reason that it is gay.
Is this really a trend? I mean, are some fans so attached to these characters in a romantic way as to hate any instance of male characters in the show? Cause if it is real, I’m sorry, it is one of the single most pathetic things I have ever heard.
Soarin’, when paired with Rainbow Dash or Spitfire, is often hated.
Braeburn has almost universally from his introduction been portrayed as gay.
Big Mac, usually nothing because again, portrayed as either gay or “good enough” for Fluttershy/Cheerilee because of his lack of a personality, can essentially be an AiE.
And then there’s Discord, I guess.
Point is that any show that tends to have a mostly-female cast will unintentionally or intentionally attract a male fanbase. These males will either make excuses to why “their” character totally wouldn’t be attracted to them because they’re lesbian/not their type.
Any male is seen as a threat, and males that are seemingly less threatening are portrayed as weak in order to make people feel more easily able to fight for “their” character.
So yes, a lot of Spike hate DOES come from that he’s a male, and ESPECIALLY from the fact that he is genuinely in love with one of the main characters.
Some can’t stand this, so they hate whenever he shows up and find excuses to why he shouldn’t be around.
That’s actually not so surprising to hear.
Im not saying I don’t believe you. If that’s the reason you have, then ok, that’s it and its a perfectly valid reason to dislike a character.
What Im saying though, is that I have seen many people who start out trying to justify themselves with the writing argument, just for it to crumble to pieces when most of the examples they list, can be attributed to other characters as well. In the end, it always comes to “said character can get away with it because he/she (though its normally a she) is said charactrer…but not Spike. If he messes up, acts a bit like a jerk or is insensitive or greedy or whiny or anything, then he gets the hate. No excuses needed.
Not really.
I mean you’ve got Spike…
Oh.
There’s Shining…
Oh.
What about Flash…
Forget that.
Soarin’, Braeburn, and Big Mac?
And yes, that worry is a large enough group that I mention it.
But I have no other reason that I hate him. :/ You may not believe me, that’s fine, but I really don’t.
Yeah all the characters have been poorly written at some point, that’s true. But I feel they haven’t been poorly written as often as Spike though.
That’s not a good excuse, considering pretty much every main character in this show is poorly written every once in a while. I also didn’t say that “everyone” who hates him had to do so because of those reasons, but they’re the ones that always stand out the most.
Spike being hated because he’s badly written may be true for some people, ok, but a lot of them also just use it as an excuse to justify whatever other reason they have. This is made especially obvious with them having no problems with other characters who are often portrayed as badly as Spike usually is, or that screw up in a similar way.
I know it may seem arbitrary, but I have seen it happen so many times its ridiculous.
For example, people who bitch and whine about Spike’s antics when the CMC often make the same mistakes, and yet its perfectly ok because they’re the adorable fillies everyone loves, while Spike is the waifu-threatening male who is never allowed to catch a break.
