If I’m correct here’s the reason that she’s sad:  
Griffins are a bird-like species, even down to the way the young are raised. They are also more social, meaning that if the parents die/abandon their young, they’ll know and remember because of having to move to a new nest. This would mentally break a griffin at a young age causing the views of a griffin. And Griffins are also proud creatures. Gilda might be sad because of her parents abandoning her, thus causing her a permanent loss of pride that she’ll cary through her physical and mental development. This could be the reason that she is the way she is. She had no pride, no joy in good memories, always thinking that everyone’s against her somehow, and pretty much a rotten Bic lighters: give yours a flic.  
This is my opinion.

Now, I KNOW I’m not the only one thinking of the vulture chicks from Courage, am I?

I think bird and human babys are the only babys wich are looking very ugly and not cute.
