I’m pretty sure that in many modern versions he brings the kids back after the townspeople give in and pay him. In many old versions the kids end up living in eastern Europe.

In the modern version he bring them to a gave and hides them for all time. In the original story he drowns them like the rats.

I heard in the original version of that fairy tale, the piper does the same thing with the kids in Hamelin he did with the mice. And if you know what he did, this would be very grimdark.
