Then just what, pray tell, is that mist that’s surrounding her as she’s transforming into Nightmare Moon? It obviously didn’t come from Luna, leaving only one explanation for what that mist is.

Except the Nightmare Forces are canon. And to be honest, she would have no real reason to be sorry for anything Nightmare Moon did if they weren’t. Considering the unsettling moral implications that arise in removing the Nightmare Forces from the picture.

Somehow, I ended up with the impression that the Nightmare Force was created by Luna in the first place.
 
The arc really seemed to be building up to it, then the thread just kinda disappeared without actually saying where the Nightmare Force came from, so I’m not sure if Luna made it or not.

Frankly, I’m glad if the “Nightmare Forces” are noncanon. I like it when one gets to delve into the moral consequences and self-justifying perspectives of someone doing things like that of their own volition. If not, then Luna just gets written off as “Oh, the sweet wittle Woobie didn’t mean to bweak Cewestia’s pwecious daytime.” And that’s just a waste!

Okay, fine. Obviously an animated gif can’t have sound, so I’m referring to the actual show. As far as the show goes, they did NOT use Nightmare Moon’s voice, and used Princess Luna’s voice instead. They ARE different. If you watch episodes 1 and 2, NMM’s voice is much deeper and more menacing. Luna’s voice doesn’t work nearly as well in this form. (in my opinion, of course).
