Background Pony #71A8
Real horses are as colorblind as dogs and cats, too. MLP Ponies have primate-like trichromatic vision, as evidenced by their ability to distinguish the same range of colors as people do and describe them by name. They also have enormous craniums. And some of them can use magic and fly around with wings sprouting from their backs.

Genetically-speaking, these things are freakin’ aliens.

Here on Earth, ponies are breeds of horses that are smaller than standard breeds of horses. Horses, including ponies, can’t vomit because the esophageal sphincter is extremely strong, and also because it enters he stomach at a right angle, in what’s structurally the middle. It doesn’t make a straight line to the top of the stomach like it does in most animals. A horse is more likely to rupture its stomach trying to vomit, than to actually get food to go back up into the esophagus.

In Equestria they’re magical, talking animals, who have been shown vomiting. So presumably the differences in anatomy associated with talking, among other things, have also allowed them to puke.

As an aside, horses can quite comfortably eat meat, and usually enjoy doing so. They have no trouble digesting it, in moderation, and it’s not bad for them. They’re not built to routinely catch meat. While they can run many other animals down, they have slender, fragile legs that aren’t really good for wrestling prey to the ground. Nor can their flexible lips and wide, blunt teeth render meat easily off carcasses, whether scavenged or hunted. Their intestines rely on being full of roughage that they ferment for nutrients over several days, and meat both lacks roughage and is very dense in easily-absorbed nutrients (meaning they’d get plenty of nutrition from relatively little meat). So a diet too high in meat would severely upset their digestive process. But a diet that included some meat, in combination with sufficient fibrous plants to keep their colons full, wouldn’t hurt them.

Equestrian ponies are not earth horses. They are a sapient race of beings. Their anatomy is a lot different than earth horses though some is similar, for the most part, it’s vastly different. User opinion and head canon taken into account of course.

@Xamrin
oh they can eat meat products too. They just (for the most part) prefer a non meat diet. My equestrian friend on the other hand (or hoof as it were) is perfectly happy with eating meat products. She especially likes pepperoni pizza. And it’s sapient not sentient.

I like to think ponies in Equestria have radically different biology than ponies from our world. This would explain why they are sentient with the ability to eat anything a human can eat. (Save for meat products)

Ponies also can’t fly or use magic. Nor can they break out into perfectly choreographed song and dance routines on a whim.
